Welcome to Tina's Pool School!

I am a certified survival swim skills instructor for children.

Survival Swim training is crucial for the safety of our children. In Florida, children have access to water everyday. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children under 4. Give your child the gift of lifesaving skills today!

Children will receive individual Survival Swim lessons in my private pool that are 10 minutes long, 4 days a week, for 6 -7 weeks based on your child's individual needs. They will learn a Swim~Float~Swim to safety sequence.

Services

Infant Float

Swim ~ Float ~ Swim & Strokes

Swim ~ Float ~ Swim & Strokes

Infants from six months of age and older can learn the muscle memory to be able to flip over onto their backs and maintain a  lifesaving float for upwards of one minute.

Children ages one and up, will be taught to swim under the water, while building proper breath control. Children will learn how to seek out the edges of the pool, along with learning to float when they become fatigued.

As kids become more coordinated and confident Tina can work with them to develop basic swim strokes.

Hi, I'm Tina

As a native Floridian and having lived around pools and lakes most of my life, I recognize the importance of swim safety. Early in my career, I worked as a Lifeguard, an EMT and a 911 operator, where I experienced some of the unfortunate outcomes from water related emergencies.

As a mom to two boys who successfully completed survival swim safety lessons when they were young, I understand how parents feel regarding safety of our children with bodies of water everywhere here in Central Florida.

I have been a Physical Therapist Assistance for 20 years including orthopedics, neuro and vestibular rehabilitation and enjoy teaching people to help themselves.

I am now trained and Certified as a Survival Swimming Instructor and look forward to teaching you and your child to be safe in and around the water.

Survival Swimming Do's and Don'ts

  • What I teach is a THIRD LINE of defense.
  • The FIRST is always have your eyes on your children.
  • The SECOND is a fence.
  • The THIRD is learning to float and swim.

Your enrollment in survival swim lessons is just the beginning. To help you understand the importance of your cooperation during and outside of lessons I have collaborated with another instructor to compile these tips. These suggestions are intended to aid in your child's success throughout their swimming journey.

Don't

  • Please refrain from sitting poolside while asking your child to swim to you. It's important to remember we are teaching them to survive when no one is around.
  • Asking your child to blow bubbles is exactly what we are trying to keep them from doing. Instead, ask them to hold their breath and show them how you close your lips.
  • If you choose to practice floating in the bathtub, make sure the water is high enough to allow your child to float without touching the bottom of the tub. We want to make sure they are actually floating and not resting on the bottom.
  • Hot tubs are fun, but they don't allow for any real swimming. let's keep vertical playtime to a limit and encourage horizontal swimming.
  • We know this is a stressful time. If you are feeling anxious, your child will pick up on it. Always smile and say encouraging words. And please leave the teaching to us. We promise the cheering will go far!
  • Unless you are boating, do not use flotation devices or arm floats. Not only do they encourage vertical positions that go against horizontal swimming but they provide a false sense of confidence and security. Every ten minutes spent in flotation devices will add one more lessons to undo the behavior learned.
  • Sneaking snacks before lessons will always show up in the pool. We understand how hard it is, but imagine if every kid did it. Nobody wants to swim in that!

Do

  • Do offer rewards. If the reward is food, it may be best to wait until all the air is out of their body.
  • Do cheer and get excited! We do too!
  • Do make time for fun water time!
  • Do read them books about swimming and floating. As, we have suggestions!
  • Do talk about lessons and ask what they learned. Be excited for them!
  • Do video and let them watch themselves!
  • Do feel free to ask questions. We know time is limited, but we are available via text or email.
